Nigeria Warned on Data Risks from New AI Platforms
Abuja, Nigeria – December 8, 2025 – The National Information Technology Development Agency has issued a public advisory cautioning Nigerians about emerging data security risks linked to the growing use of advanced artificial intelligence platforms. The agency stated that new generations of AI models now widely used for writing assistance, data processing, and decision support may expose users to vulnerabilities if not properly managed.
According to the advisory, several AI applications possess expanded capabilities that can unintentionally allow indirect prompt manipulation, unauthorised access to personal information, and exploitation through malicious inputs. The agency added that these risks are heightened when users submit sensitive data, including financial records, identity documents, or confidential business information, into unregulated AI tools.
The statement emphasised the importance of responsible digital behaviour and urged citizens to adopt stronger data protection measures. Users were advised to limit the type of information provided to AI platforms, verify the credibility of applications before use, and avoid sharing private or security-related details.
The agency also highlighted Nigeria’s focus on developing a more secure digital ecosystem as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, business operations, and public sector systems. It reiterated its commitment to continuous monitoring, policy guidance, and collaboration with stakeholders to ensure safe adoption of emerging technologies.
Digital governance experts have welcomed the advisory, noting that awareness is critical as AI adoption expands across the country. Many stressed the need for updated regulatory frameworks, stronger data protection practices, and enhanced public education to mitigate risks associated with rapid technological change.
The agency is expected to issue further guidelines as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen national cyber resilience and safeguard the digital rights of citizens.
